Tashkent Airport Alliance established to deliver new Tashkent International Airport
Tashkent Airport Alliance (“TAA”) has today announced its establishment as the company responsible for jointly delivering the new Tashkent International Airport in partnership with Government of Uzbekistan, a major infrastructure project designed to support Uzbekistan’s growing economy and its ambition to strengthen the country’s connections with the world. The new airport will serve as the largest integrated aviation, travel and logistics hub in Central Asia.
The new airport comes as Uzbekistan enters its next phase of economic growth, targeting GDP of US $300 billion and income per capita of US $4,000 while aiming to welcome 20 million foreign tourists annually by 2030, with transport connectivity identified as an important enabler of economic development. This growth is placing increasing demands on the country’s aviation infrastructure.
The new Tashkent International Airport is being developed in response to this requirement. Located on a 1,300-hectare site, 23 km south of the city along major existing and planned highway and high-speed rail corridors, the airport will have an initial capacity to handle up to 20 million passengers and 129,000 tons of cargo per year, roughly double that of the city’s existing airport - infrastructure capable of supporting Uzbekistan’s future aviation and connectivity needs.
Developed through a Public-Private Partnership combining the expertise of Vision International Investment Company (“Vision Invest”) of Saudi Arabia, Sojitz Corporation (“Sojitz”) of Japan, Korean airport operator Incheon International Airport Corporation (“IIAC”) and Uzbekistan Airports JSC, TAA, in partnership with Government of Uzbekistan, is responsible for the financing, development, construction, and future operation of the new Tashkent International Airport.
“Since 2016, Uzbekistan has undergone one of the most significant periods of economic and social transformation in its modern history. Under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the country has opened to the world, accelerated investment, expanded trade and placed connectivity at the centre of its long-term development agenda. As Uzbekistan's economy grows, international engagement increases and our role as a bridge between Europe and Asia expands, the infrastructure supporting that progress must evolve at the same pace. The new Tashkent International Airport is a strategic national project that reflects these ambitions. It will provide the capacity required to support future growth in trade, logistics and tourism, strengthen Uzbekistan's position as a regional transport hub, and create new opportunities for businesses, investors and future generations.”
“In line with global demand for destinations that offer unique cultural heritage and accessibility, Uzbekistan is attracting growing international interest as both a tourism destination and a strategic trade corridor between Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Connectivity is fundamental to competitiveness, and the new Tashkent International Airport has been designed to address these challenges, providing the capacity needed to support future growth in passenger travel, cargo movement and international connectivity.”
TAA’s responsibilities extend beyond the development of the airport infrastructure. The company is committed to managing the project’s environmental and social impacts transparently, in accordance with applicable national requirements and recognised international standards.
New Tashkent International Airport will feature a 208,000 square meter terminal and two 4 kilometre runways, and run on 100% renewable energy. Construction will continue through 2030 and is projected to create up to 5,500 jobs, while the overall economic effect of the project is forecast at over 200,000 jobs.
Tashkent Airport Alliance is responsible for the financing, development, construction, and future operation of the New Tashkent International Airport under a public-private partnership (“PPP”) arrangement with the Government of Uzbekistan that includes a 35-year concession for airport management and expansion.
The Republic of Uzbekistan is currently undergoing a period of rapid economic and infrastructure development. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s Uzbekistan 2030 Strategy places connectivity, investment, trade and tourism at the centre of this transformation, including a target of attracting $250 billion in total investment by 2030. The new airport is one of Uzbekistan’s most significant infrastructure PPPs, a major expression of the country’s ambition to strengthen its position as a regional aviation and transport hub, and a vital facility for supporting inbound investment and promoting tourism along the ancient Silk Road.
